My neighbour Christie is upset with me! She is an avid reader of this blog (thanks Christie!) and feels I am sending out the wrong message by advising people to use pharmaceuticals to achieve their weight loss. First of all people, I am not giving anybody any advice, right? And if pharmaceuticals help us to become more healthy, more confident, more fit, my question is 'why not'?
Christie honey, Sue and Latisha and I are not just jumping the pharmaceutical route. God knows we have lived in the Zone, Atkinned ourselves to high cholesterol, and South Beached ourselves to empty wallets. I have tried the cabbage soup diet, the grapefruit diet, the Hollywood miracle detox diet. I have been good friends with Jenny Craig, cleansed my colon and popped Acai berry pills all day long. Now, if after all this, I still cannot get my weight under control, can you blame me for getting a little help? A boost? And since you have been following my blog, you do know that we are all making lifestyle changes as well (except for Ms. Latisha!).
All we are doing is getting a little help from the pros.
I envy all the gorgeous spokespersons and models in the fitness and diet ads. They have the glossiest hair, the whitest teeth and the latest designer duds. They look so beautiful and fit and tanned while they ski down scenic slopes, or hike on magnificent mountain trails, or swim in bright blue oceans or tan on pristine white beaches. While I would so love to do that, by the time I deal with my job, my family, the children's homework, their laundry, the cooking, the dirty dishes, 'dating my husband' (as all the marriage advisors say I must!), and visiting my parents and friends, I am too pooped to do anything but flop on the sofa, remote in hand. (Unless my husband has beat me to it, in which case I do not even have the energy to try and wrestle it from him).
So my question to Christie is this: Is it too awful for an ordinary, working wife and mother to look to pharmaceuticals to jumpstart her weight loss? I honestly think not.
What say you?

WestCoastDrugs Delivers!
I am so excited! Yesterday evening I got a call from Sue saying our meds had arrived. We all high tailed it to Sue's place to check the stuff out. Well, it is all there... Sibutramine for Latisha, Orlistat for Sue, AyurSlim for me and loads of face creams for Katy. She is very excited with the Glyco A acid cream and her Vitamin C with Kojic Acid cream. These products would have cost her a fortune in the US, but were very affordable at WestCoastDrugs.
So far, WestCoastDrugs has delivered in more ways than one. Their customer service was great (Thay are the only ones that actually responded to our e-mail). The price was excellent, and the products arrived in the time they specified. Now let us see if they really work as they are supposed to. Of course I shall keep you informed.
Now we are getting seriously into our weight loss program.
I am going to work out for about an hour 5 days a week. One day with the kettle bells, one day treadmill. Plus I shall start with 2 capsules of AyurSlim twice a day, 15 minutes after breakfast and dinner. Then once the weight drops off, I shall take just 1 capsule twice a day. Naturally I am going to make sure I eat more healthy; that is going to be a real challenge!
Latisha is completely confident the Sibutramine (1 capsule each morning) will do all the work so she won't have to work out! Dream on Latisha.
Sue will take 1 capsule of Orlistat with each meal. Plus she is going to walk in the park for an hour every single day, and go with her group for a 3 hour ramble each Sunday. She is still hoping her teenage daughter will join her, but as the days go by, she has kind of given up on that.
Katy has started her veggies only diet. This lady has got sheer will power. She eats nothing but veggies, and even those either raw or very lightly grilled! Hats off to you Katy! I absolutely do not think I could do that.
Well, we weighed ourselves last night. I am (ooops! this is embarassing) 155 lbs. Sue, 173, Latisha a whopping 189, and Katy is a beautiful 149. Hey, she is a tall girl, and I really do not think she needs to lose any weight at all.
Well everybody, wish us luck! We have to all get gorgeous and skinny by the 1st of July!

Confessions of a Chocoholic!
Okay, I must confess I am a major chocoholic! I have a 4 to 5 bar a day habit. I cannot keep away from anything chocolate. Chocolate bars, candy bars, chocolate chunk cookies, chocolate icecream (are you aware of how many varieties there are? mmmmmm).... I could go on and on. So, when I started my weight loss journey, I decided that one of the first things I would have to do is control the chocolate cravings. (I am hoping AyurSlim from WestCoastDrugs will help with that, since it is supposed to reduce cravings. Check it out at http://www.westcoastdrugs.net/generic-medicine/AyurSlim/340.html ; Okay, that is today's plug for WestCoastDrugs).
Anyway, until my AyurSlim arrives, I have hit upon another plan. You know how they say (I always wondered who the 'they' were. It just seems that as soon as you hear the words 'they say' you absolutely accept whatever it is 'they' are saying as gospel truth.) that dark chocolate is actually good for you? Well, I went and bought a huge bar of extra dark 80% cocoa chocolate. Just pure dark chocolate. Now, whenever I feel a chocolate craving coming up, I have a piece of the dark chocolate. It gives me a total chocolate fix. Now if only I could find a way to go from a half a dozen chocolate cravings a day down to a couple!
Sue is very happy with her walking group. They meet every Sunday morning at 8 am at different spots, and then proceed for lovely, long walks in parks and in the country. The only downside to this is that after the walk, they all get together and have a drink and something to eat. Sue enjoys the time they spend together and the new friends she has made, so she does not want to opt out of the snack time, neither does she want to eat donuts and ruin her weight loss regime. She finds it very hard to just sit there with a cup of black coffee while everybody else is stuffing their face. Any suggestions?
I have given up trying to urge Latisha to exercise. I hope the Sibutramine gives her a good start so she will be more motivated.
Well, as soon as our meds arrive, we shall weigh ourselves, and then the real journey begins!

What Katy Did (with apologies to Susan Coolidge)
Well, it finally happened. Within just 3 days, Katy is feeling awful. As I mentioned in an earlier post, Katy was going to go on this detox regime of eating nothing but tons of glasses of water, cayenne pepper and honey for a month! We all tried to dissuade her, but she can be super stubborn at times. She is bent on losing every extra inch of fat by the begining of summer, and is willing to do anything it takes to achieve her goal. The first day she started this ridiculous fast, she complained of hunger pangs, but was quite confident she could go through with it. Day 2 brought weakness and fatigue, and she had to give up her spinning mid-class. Day 3 she could not go through with her day at all. Finally last night when she had severe stomach cramps, she gave in and gave up her detox fast. Thank God for that! Now she is trying a new program where she will eat only raw vegetables for a month. Well, it sounds at least a lot more sensible than the cayenne pepper drink. Let's see how long this one lasts. I really do not think I can do anything this extreme to lose weight. On the other hand, neither do I want to imitate Latisha and do nothing except pop pills.
Wow, I am really excited to see which one of us will lose the most weight quickest. (Don't tell the other girls, but I hope you are all rooting for me!)

Monday morning blues.
Another Monday morning. I don't know why, but I just do not feel very motivated on Monday mornings. I automatically make breakfasts, school lunches, and then get to work myself. I wish we could have a 3 day weekend. I think we need Mondays off just to recover from Saturdays and Sundays. Anybody from some government agency reading this? Does anybody even know just who is supposed to be in charge of deciding holidays?
Well, last night's dinner party was quite a success. The food was much appreciated even though it was all 'good for you' stuff. I was very good and did not eat any dessert, not even the yummy cheesecake one of the guests had brought along.
Katy was the only one who exercised early this morning. I just did not have the energy (I should be excused; after all I refused cheesecake!), and Sue had an important meeting at work. Latisha had a hair emergency which made her half an hour late for work, so she parked right next to her workplace. We are really going to have to sit down and have a firm talk with her. She has got make a greater effort. Her meds will not arrive for another couple of weeks, so she will just have to take up some physical activity. Salsa classes perhaps..? I shall put the idea to her. Actually that sounds like something we all would enjoy.
I promise to do an hour on the treadmill this evening. The exercise is really helping. I have not lost any weight, but everything seems firmer and more toned. I cannot wait for my AyurSlim to arrive. WestCoastDrugs has promised to deliver our meds within 7 working days (We have chosen their SpeedPost option), and I shall let you know if they arrive on time.
My coffee break is over, so back to the grind.
A special 'hi there' to all the lovely people who are reading my posts. Thank you all!

Sunday Dinner
Today a few friends are coming over to my place for a sit down dinner, so I really do not have much time to blog. I am cooking beef pilaf, roast chicken with herbs, spicy grilled fish, and a cucumber and parsley salad with yogourt. Dessert will be creme brullee (or to sound less facy, caramel custard). I think that seems quite a healthy menu, right? Hope the guests like it though. The wonderful thing about when I am cooking for others is that generally by the time we sit down to eat, I have absolutely no apetite for any of the food. It is an entirely different story when I go to my friends' for dinner. Then I happily stuff my face with just about everything. I think for most women eating something they have not themselves cooked is a real treat.
Update:
We have all ordered our meds.
WestCoastDrugs carries 'branded generic' versions of the meds we require. So Latisha has ordered Sibutramine (generic Meridia)15 mgs., Sue is going in for the Orlistat (generic Xenical)120 mgs., and I am going to try AyurSlim. AyurSlim sounds exactly the kind of product I am looking for with other health benefits as well. Katy ordered a few excellent skin care products, which if purchased in the US would have cost her a fortune. Check them out under 'Beauty & Skin Care' on the WestCoastDrugs site.
Well, more tomorrow. For now, the kitchen beckons.
Fatties of the world unite. You have nothing to lose but the weight! (Yes, 'fatties'.. no euphemisms here!)
(With apologies to Karl Marx, and Fredriech Engels.)

All I can say is ' Yeay WestCoastDrugs' and thank you! Hey everybody reading this blog, please use the wonderful people at WestCoastDrugs for your meds. They have really low prices and the discount will be a big help too. I shall keep plugging their site in my posts as promised.
Okay, I am going to get my girls and send off our order right away.
In the meantime, we have all started making some changes in our life. I go on the treadmill for about 45 minutes every other day, and do a rigorous kettle bell workout on the alternate days. I love the From Russia with Tough Love kettle bell workout with Pavel Tsatsouline. It is very easy to do, so I was feeling really good about myself. Until the next day, when every muscle in my body was screaming in agony! But you know, I have been doing this for just a week, and already I feel better, firmer... Perhaps it is just my imagination, but I do not think so.
Sue has started walking in the park every day for about an hour, but so far her plan to do it with her daughter has met with strong opposition from the teenager. Now Sue is planning to join a nature lovers' group that goes for beautiful rambles on the weekends.
Latisha is still kinda waiting for the meds. However, she does walk a lot in the mall! Lol! And she has started parking her car a couple of streets further from her work place. One step at a time, right?
Katy is going gung ho at the gym. She is taking spinning classes, and will start her punishing regime of cayenne and honey fasting from tomorrow. Poor girl!
Well, that is it for now. I think we are all on the right track so far.

Just why do we want to be thin?
'You cannot be too rich or too thin' I do not think Mrs. Wallis Simpson realised how these words would become almost immortal, and how they would result in anorexia, bulemia, and even just plain ol thoughts of inadequacy.
But is it really true? Especially the 'thin' part?
I was walking furiously on the treadmill last night, and thinking, Why do we all so desperately want to become thin? No, not just thin, but skinny? What is the motivation? How will our lives suddenly change if we go from a size 16 to a size 6? I am not talking about the health benefits here. All women say they are losing weight for their health, but come on ladies, really??? Is that all you are losing weight for? What about the size 8s who are going crazy trying to become a size 4? (Walking on the treadmill is so mind numbingly boring, I come up with these ways to torture my mind!)
I think one of the things all women believe is that they will find true love if they are more beautiful (insert 'skinny' here). But is that really true? About 12 years ago, Sue's husband left her for a woman 9 years older and about 20 pounds heavier. Go figure! I do not think most men out there find a size 2 woman very sexy. She may look terrific on the pages of a glossy magazine, very artistically made up and posed, but in real life..? My husband insists he hates it when I get skinny (it has been known to happen, especially when I was in my 20s).
Latisha is big, and has the most wonderful guy totally crazy about her. And yet she feels somehow inadequate.
I asked this question of some of my colleagues at work and got the stock answers about health, increased self confidence (this from a junior partner! She has got better qualifications and more experience than anybody at work, and she does not feel confident unless she can be a size 2?)etc. But not one woman openly told me she wanted to look drop dead gorgous and attract every man's eye! (I don't know if I should speak so openly and honestly! Yikes!) Come on ladies, don't you have this fantasy about being a size 2, in an incredibly sexy dress, catching a handsome and successful hunk's eye across a crowded room, and being whisked away in his Ferrari to live happily ever after? No? Really?
Which brings me back to the question, Apart from the obvious health benefits, why do we really want to be THAT thin? Any suggestion? Anybody?

Motivation and the Final Splurge.
We sent out the mails yesterday, and are still waiting for replies. So far - nothing! But I am not going to get disheartened. I know something good will happen.
Yesterday all 4 of us went to the mall and decided to buy 1 gorgeous outfit each - that perfect outfit we were all dreaming of; the one that would make us look like Cinderellas going to the ball! In the size we were aiming to be.
I just cannot make up my mind what look I am aiming for. Boho chic (a look I just love, but just doesn't look sexy in a size 16), sophisticated glamour girl, or very tight jeans and sexy white shirt with a boyfriend blazer. It has been years since I have worn a pair of jeans with super confidence. I can see myself with my jeans casually tucked into a pair of slim boots (naturally with stiletto heels), and the blazer casually thrown over my shoulders, smiling a confident sexy smile like the girls in the Boston Proper catalogues. Dream on Marcie.
Latisha has already picked out her dress. Peach coloured chiffony stuff cut very low, with an uneven hemline, and with a very slinky fit around the tummy and hips. Only thing is she is an XXL right now and she has bought it in a size S! Now that is optimism and a terrific attitude!
Sue wants to look young and fresh. We cannot find anything she approves of. And we are all fed up. Sometimes I can really sympatise with her teenage daughter.
Katy has really gone extreme (that girl always does that!) and picked out a very very sexy turquoise bikini with a matching sarong. She wants to take hubby to the Carribean for a second honeymoon as soon as she feels confident enough to wear the bikini. And I am quite sure she will do it very quickly too! We all tease her saying she will probably fall pregnant again and all the weight loss will have been for nothing.
And then, guess what? We sit down at the Food Court and have tacos and chimichangaas to celebrate! Of course we agree this will be our last fast food splurge until all our weight goals are achieved. (Ha! Like any of us except Katy truly believe that!). Feeling very virtuous, we skip the Baskin Robbins ice creams we have been dreaming about and settle for Frozen Yogourts. well, our last junk food splurge must have some dessert, right?
Okay, I shall keep you updated. That is it for now.

Do we really have to be rich to be thin?
We did not realise how much our weight loss program was going to cost!
Yesterday we met up after work and tried to purchase all our meds. What a shock! Do you even know the price of Meridia and Xenical? Except for Latisha who has a fabulous job, the rest of us simply cannot afford to spend that kind of cash. Then Sue suggested checking out internet pharmacies. And I needed to research good herbal weight loss supplements. There are a ton of those on the market, but most sound ridiculous and completely unbelievable. I did find a very promising one with Irvingia on the Life Extensions website, but at $78.99 for a 30 day supply, that too is a bit over my budget.
Katy had a marvellous idea. She suggested writing to a few of the big internet pharmacies and asking them for a considerable discount. In return we would plug their website on our blog. But naturally, ONLY if the meds were good and effective. Sue is extremely sceptical about this scheme, but then she is always a pessimist.
Well, we researched 12 of the most reliable internet pharmacies, and sent them all a copy of this mail.
Dear _____ (pharmacy).
We are four friends on a mission to find the most practical method of weigth loss; one that actually works. Two of our members are planning to go the pharmaceutical route. Would your company be able to give us a significant discount on the products we require? Right now we are interested in Meridia and Xenical. Either the name brands or the generic versions will do. In return we would be happy to recommend your company whole heartedly on our blog. We hope to have quite a large audience very soon, and will mention your company regularly on our posts. Naturally, this is only on condition that your products are genuine and effective. We are looking for a good herbal weight loss supplement as well. Do you carry any of those?
Hoping for a favourable response,
The Fab Four.

What do you think? A lil bit of good ol' fashioned American ingenuity, right? I shall let you know if we get a response from anybody. Then we can really answer the question - Do we really have to be rich to be thin?
Until next time.
PS: We are going to call ourselves the Fab Four from now on. I am sure the Beatles will not mind. (At least I hope not!)

Meet the Heroines
It is time to meet the fab 4 (or should I say the 'flab' 4?).
You have already met me, Marcie. I am 37 years old, have 2 kids and don't know where my waistline has gone to.
Sue is 51, just past menopause, 1 teenage daughter; her weight - 173 pounds (which she swears have piled on thanks to her aggravating teenager!) which she is determined to bring down to 130.
Latisha is African American, just 25, gorgeous, but a lot of gorgeous at 189 lbs. for her 5 foot 1 inch frame. She blames it all on her genes.
Katy is absolutely perfect as she is. Tall (5 feet, 8 inches) and beautiful and quite slender (well, compared to the rest of us anyway) at 149 lbs., she is still not too pleased with the slight bulges and pockets of fat she acquired during her pregnancy, and wants to knock off about 15 lbs. She is 30 and wants to be in perfect shape by her 31st birthday.
We have tried all the miracle diets, meal replacement shakes, and fancy supplements, and lost a ton of money, but not much of the weight. So, this time we are all going to try different ways, and see what works best.
I am going to eat very very healthy. Small portions every 2 to 3 hours. Lean meat, lots of veggies, lots of water, NO refined starches (that is a tough one), NO sugary treats (well, maybe 1 really little one each day, but in the morning when the digestive system is supposed to work its best). And, I am planning to use a herbal supplement as an added boost. I plan to exercise 5 times a week, and follow that up with a rice protein shake. I have been told that is the best kind.
Sue, is going to try Xenical (Orlistat), a stronger version of Alli, along with a sensible diet (we cannot agree what exactly constitutes a sensible diet for her, since she vetoes anything we suggest). Plus she will go for long walks every day, preferably with her daughter for a quality bonding experience.
Latisha wants to go absolutely pharmaceutical. She is planning to use Meridia (Sibutramine) starting with the 5 mg. strength. She has promised to use the stairs instead of the elevator, and will walk to and from work (about 2 kms. each way), and put in some physical effort eary day. But I know she is really banking on the Sibutramine.
Katy is going to try extreme stuff. She is planning to use the cayenne pepper, honey and water drink made famous by Beyonce along with vitamins and other supplements. She wants to do this for a month! We are absolutely trying to dissuade her, but so far she is adamant. Honestly, I do not think she will go beyond one day of starving herself.
Well, our efforts begin on the 21st of February; come and see how things work out.

Four Fat Females to Four Fit Femme Fatales - A Journey!
Hi everybody.
I am Marcie. 5 foot 4 inches. 155 lbs. According to most health and fashion magazines, I am hopelessly overweight. My ideal weight should be around 110 lbs. (as if..).Anyway, my friends (also overweight) and I have decided we are going to do something about our weight. And chronicle the entire journey.
Why 'fat'?
I have used the word 'fat' in the title; not 'big' or 'curvy' or 'heavy' or 'voluptious'. Enough of all these euphemisms. Have you noticed nobody ever tells you that you are fat? When a pair of jeans just won't slide up your thighs, has any sales girl ever told you your thighs are too fat? Of course not! Although you know she is so thinking that! So, I am doing away with the ridiculous fancy words. Let's call a spade a spade, ladies.
My three friends (more about them later) and I are just plain fat. And we are going to try to lose some of that fat in different ways. And, I am going to keep letting you know how it goes. If anybody out there has some pointers for us, please do share. And wish us luck!
